Form 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)

The 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) is a federal tax required for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 55,000 pounds or more that are used on public highways. It is collected by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and helps fund highway maintenance and infrastructure. Form 2290 is filed annually, typically for the tax period of July 1 – June 30. The tax is due by August 31 of the tax year. If your vehicle is first used after August, the HVUT is prorated for the remaining months of the period. Tax Amount is Calculated based on the vehicle’s weight. Heavier vehicles pay higher taxes.
